We are all born as equals. But many times equality remains just at that. Because once life begins, the society begins to categorize us and it is there that inequality begins to take its root. There are some differences that are nature's creations, and it is all there for a purpose. But the man made inequalities serves no purpose!
Being born in India, and as a girl, the most common inequality is in terms of gender. Gender inequality is everywhere starting from the games that we play in childhood to the workplaces where many times women are still not paid as much as men though they do the same work.
Little girls are usually gifted with dolls and boys with cars. What if a boy wants to play with a doll? "Don't behave like a girls", he is said and the same response if a girl asks for a car.
When children are growing up, in most of the houses girls are asked to help the mother in the household work. So if the girl asks why is her brother playing and why can't he also help in the household work, the reply she gets is "Girls have to do the household chores and boys/ men don't do it".
When a teenage boy wants to go out with his friends, it is not a problem. But if a girl wants to go out, either she is not permitted or even if permitted, a thousand questions are asked. Why? Just because she is a girl born in this cruel world.
When a boy or a man is sad, according to the so called rules of the society he can't cry. Why? Because men don't cry!
We see these and many such instances in our day to day lives. Why is it that men are supposed to behave in certain way and women in a different way? I agree that the society is progressing and there are a few changes being seen and in a few ways in a few people, these mentality of inequality is decreasing. This may be in the progressive society or in cities but in rural areas, inequality is still on the rise. My question is- Why these differences?
